Bog Oak Thor's Hammer Pendant (PE1822)

This tactile and chunky Thor's hammer pendant is newly crafted from ancient bog oak. The beautifully rich-coloured wood is from the area of the Somerset Levels near Glastonbury, the fabled Isle of Avalon. The wood is approximately 3,200 years old, dating back to the Iron Age. It feels full of positive energies.

The Old Norse runic script "Til verja" meaning "to protect" has been added to the front.

The pendant is filled with dried mugwort and fly agaric. Mugwort has been used for millennia to to aid clairvoyance, lucid dreaming and astral projection. Our ancestors drank tea made from the leaves and it has also been used in incenses or smoked to induce visions. In times past it was considered to act as a protective charm, warding off evil.

Fly agaric is a famous fungi known from mythology and fairy tales, and is considered to have strong associations with witchcraft and the Fae.

The herbs are sealed inside with a plug of Summer Solstice-gathered holloway blackthorn.

Thor's hammer, also known by its Norse name of Mjölnir or Mjöllnir, features in Norse mythology as one of the most fearsome weapons, capable of levelling mountains.

The Prose Edda (an Icelandic saga full of Norse mythology) gives a summary of Mjölnir's special qualities in that, with Mjölnir, Thor:

... would be able to strike as firmly as he wanted, whatever his aim, and the hammer would never fail, and if he threw it at something, it would never miss and never fly so far from his hand that it would not find its way back, and when he wanted, it would be so small that it could be carried inside his tunic.

Today, Thor's hammer is often used as a symbol of protection.
