Avalonian Bog Oak Goddess (AP029)
This wonderful Goddess is newly crafted from ancient wood, carved into a beautiful figurine with a full moon above her head. She is created from bog oak, from the area of the Somerset Levels near Glastonbury, the fabled Isle of Avalon. The wood is approximately 3,200 years old, dating back to the Iron Age, and is a beautifully deep, rich colour.
The Goddess is filled with our protective herb blend which includes herbs respectfully gathered from the land surrounding the sacred site of Stonehenge. Betony, enchanter's nightshade, and mugwort root are also added.
Betony is traditionally associated with protection, both of the area surrounding it, and of the person carrying or wearing it. If placed beneath the pillow, it's considered to protect the sleeper against nightmares. It's also associated with dispelling negativity and soothing tensions.
Enchanter's nightshade has long associations with witchcraft and sorcery. It's considered to aid inner conflict and has been traditionally used to find balance by bringing opposites together. Binding, hexing and enchantment is also associated with this beautiful herb. It is also connected with the goddess of the moon, and was used in spells and rituals to call upon her power.
Mugwort has been used for millennia to to aid clairvoyance, lucid dreaming and astral projection. Our ancestors drank tea made from the leaves and it has also been used in incenses or smoked to induce visions. In times past it was considered to act as a protective charm, warding off evil.
The piece is infused with the energies of this potent ancient herb blend from inside and will make an excellent addition to your altar or sacred space.
The herbs are permanently sealed inside with a plug of blackthorn wood which was gathered with respect from an ancient spring in southern Britain. The spring has been held sacred for millennia and with links to the Old Ways and associations with fertility. The spring is one of the sources of the River Itchen whose name has connections with a pre-Roman Goddess, Ica. Very little written information exists about her today, but Ica is a Goddess truly of the ancient land in this area and there is still a strong sense of her at the spring. Real magick, old magick is still to be found in the energies of this place.
A bindrune for ancestral connection has been added to the base, and this can be seen in the last photo.
The figurine is free-standing on a flat surface and is wonderfully tactile - perfect for holding during sleep or meditation.
A wonderfully special piece made with real Celtic soul.
