This simple, tactile bead is carved from bog oak from the Glastonbury area - long fabled to be the Isle of Avalon. Bog oak, by its very nature is always an ancient wood. It is a term used for wood which dates from hundreds, to thousands, of years ago and which has been naturally preserved in wet ground. The tannins gradually stain the wood a dark colour ranging from rich browns through to the deepest black. The wood used for this bead is beautifully rich and dark in colour and dates back to around 3,000 years ago.
The bead is supplied with leather or cotton cord thong and can be hung vertically (hanging style 1 on the numbered photo - the thong is doubled and threaded through the resulting loop at the top of the bead so the bead will sit vertically) or horizontally (hanging style 2 on the numbered photo - the thong is threaded through singly so the bead will sit horizontally when the thong is tied closed for a necklace). If you have a preference about the thonging type or the hanging style please add a note in the message box during checkout.
Bead size: 3.75 - 4 cm /1 3/8 - 1 5/8 inches long (approx. - will vary just slightly as five beads are available at the time of listing and they are each hand carved)
